ARE COCKAPOOS HYPOALLERGENIC?
There are often adverts placed by people selling Cockapoos that state they are hypoallergenic dogs and the perfect pet for people who have allergies. Unfortunately, this is not strictly true.
One of the common causes of an allergic reaction to dogs is the dander - dead skin cells which attach themselves to the fur. If a dog doesn't shed or moult then the dander stays on the dog, doesn't fall onto carpets, furniture or get released into the air. This limits the exposure an allergic person has to the dander and so can keep symptoms at bay.
As Cockapoos are a crossbreed, it is not possible to give a 100% guarantee that they will have the non moulting Poodle type coat. Some Cockapoos may inherit the characteristics of the Cocker Spaniel more than the Poodle and so have a moulting coat, others may not.
Some people can be allergic to different things and just having a low or non moulting dog is no guarantee things will be fine. Some people are allergic to dog saliva or the actual fur itself for example.
For this reason, anyone who is known to be allergic to dogs is advised to try and spend time with Cockapoos before taking the plunge and buying one. Contact a good Cockapoo breeder and ask if you can visit to see if you have any reaction, try and spend time with both adult dogs and also puppies if possible. If you know an owner of a Cockapoo, ask if you can spend time with their dog to assess how you respond.
Do this as often as you can before taking the decision to own a Cockapoo. It could save the heartache of having to rehome a puppy or young dog you and your family have grown attached to.
