EAR TREATMENTS
Dogs sometimes get ear infections and long eared dogs like the Cockapoo may be more prone than others, but there are well tried ways of keeping your dogs ears healthy.
There is a debate as to whether Cockapoos need their ears plucked, to keep the hair growth out of the canal and allow air to circulate more freely, and some now feel this isn't necessary. For more information read our Ear Care page.
If the ear is itchy, smelly, waxy, that could indicate that something is not quite right.
Firstly rule out a foreign body or mites, and then use the HEALTH CHECKLIST. (Diet, environment etc)
Make sure the ear isn’t flooded with all sorts of cleaners. A few drops of Colloidal Silver down once a day and then sprinkle green clay around the ear flap. Thornit can work well for mites.
If your dog does get an ear infection the following may help. Always get a vet to check if concerned.
ITCHY EARS
COLLOIDAL SILVER - (natural antibacterial, anti fungal and anti viral)
Put 3 - 5 drops of Colloidal Silver water into the dogs ear canal 3 times a day.
Gently massage the ear in a circular motion, remove your hand and allow the dog to shake its head.
If you need to you can remove any excess from the ear flap using cotton wool
Swab the inner flap with Colloidal Silver water once a day.
Add a teaspoon of Colloidal Silver to the dogs food 2 -3 times a day.
NB. NEVER put a cotton swab past the part of the ear you can easily see, you could cause damage to the ear drum, and do NOT use this treatment if your dogs eardrums are perforated or punctured.
GREEN CLAY
Sprinkle green clay around the ear flap after using the Colloidal Silver
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR - (antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic)
If there us any smell in the ears, wipe the ear with Cotton wool soaked with Apple Cider vinegar
Buy ORGANIC, Unpasteurised Apple Cider Vinegar
MITES
THORNIT POWDER
Thornit powder has been used for many years.
Just apply a pinch of powder and dust around the inner ear but NOT down into the ear canal. .
Relief can often come with the first dose, but the treatment should continue for 1-5 days.
DIET
If the ears are yeasty get help with the diet. Just cutting out grains won’t do it for long as the grain free foods have a lot of sugars/carbs to feed any yeast.
Feeding pre-biotic to yeasty dogs also is not helpful as it feeds the yeast further.
