TEACHING 'DROP'

1. Get a really tasty treat for your dog. Make it something special, not something it gets every day, so maybe a small piece of cheese, hotdog sausage or some cooked chicken
2. Get a toy and play with it with your dog.
3. When the dog is holding the toy in its mouth, hold the treat right by its nose so he can smell it. Say your command "Drop", "Give" or whatever you have decided to use.
4. When your dog drops the toy, QUICKLY put it behind you so it can't be seen, say "YES" in a happy voice, and give the treat and praise.
5. Give the toy back to your dog and repeat the process. This is letting your dog see that giving up the toy isnt the end of the world. It gets the toy back, gets a tasty treat and a bit of fuss. Great!!
6. If your dog does not drop the toy, it could be the toy is too important to it, or the treat just isnt tempting enough so change either until you find the right value for each. The treat must be more important than the toy for the dog to be keen.
7. When your dog is doing this happily, change to the next level.
STAGE 2
8. Get the toy and play with your dog
9. When the dog is holding the toy in its mouth, let it smell the treat and give the command.
10. When the dog drops the toy, hide it quickly, give lots of praise and give the toy back and play again.
11. Do this 2 or 3 times and then GIVE THE TREAT.
12. The dog will come to learn that food isnt there always but praise, fuss and the toy back will be the reward, plus a bit of tasty food now and again.
13. When your dog is happy with that, change to next level
STAGE 3
14. Get the toy and play with your dog
15. When the dog is holding the toy in its mouth take a couple of steps away and give the "Drop" command
16. Reward with a tasty treat initially then change down to praise or treat as above.
If your dog gets bored, doesn't seem keen or has problems with a particular part of the process, that's ok. Relax, let your dog set the pace and just focus on the good things it can do.
Be patient and consistent and move on to the next stage when your dog is ready.
