WEEK 4 - OFF LEAD!

Again, this should be done in a secure environment and you will need the assistance of a friend or family member your dog is comfortable with.
HOLD & CALL
Ask your assistant to hold your him while you walk away. When you are a reasonable distance - say 20ft (6m) away, with your assistant keeping hold of him, call him to you in an excited voice.
When your dog has his attention on you, use your recall command word and again all him to you. Your assistant should then release him and let him run to you.
Give lots of praise and reward.
BE FUN!
Don't forget that you need to be more interesting and exciting than your dogs surroundings. Make yourself fun to be with, use an upbeat voice, crouch down to encourage him to run to you and use the high value treats or favourite toy as a rewards.
Repeat this exercise with you holding on to your dog and your assistant calling him.
INCREASE DISTANCE
Gradually increase the distance between you and your dog when you release him. Only do this if your dog is responding well to this increase in training. If he is losing his focus or wandering, then do not increase the distance, but go back to basics and reinforce the previous lessons.
