HIP TESTS
HIP DYSPLASIA
Can affect many breeds of dog.
Hip dysplasia is a boney deformation of the hip joint, leading to pain and lameness, arthritis and pain in either one or both hips.
Testing is done by x-ray once the dog is 12 months of age.
The x-rays are the sent to the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme and given a score according to the health of the joint. Each hip is scored from 0 to 53 and the lower the score the better.
It is a genetically inherited trait so if there is HD in a pups lineage it runs an increased risk of developing the disease.
