EYE TESTS
PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY
This is an inherited disease that can affect both poodles and cocker spaniels and Cockapoos.
It affects the cells at the back of the eye and can lead to complete loss of sight.
In some dogs the disease can be present but unseen. They can be carriers but not affected themselves. This means that they may go undiagnosed but if used to breed from may pass the disease on to their puppies, which may cause their pups to go blind.
There is no cure at present.
PRA can be passed on from the parents which will be categorised on testing as either -
CLEAR - free from disease
CARRIER - has the gene is unaffected by it, but can pass the disease on to offspring
AFFECTED - has inherited the disease and could develop PRA.

DNA testing can be done by either Laboklin (UK) or OptiGen (USA)
RETINAL DYSPLASIA
Affects American Cocker Spaniel.
Can be inherited or develop due to infections and other illness such as Parvovirus, exposure to toxins etc.
The retina becomes damaged and can detach completely leading to blindness.
Testing by OptiGen (USA) and British Veterinary Association (BVA) Eye Scheme
GLAUCOMA
Affects American and English Cocker Spaniels.
The pressure inside the eye increases and the eye is damaged internally leading to blindness in one or both eyes. The damage is due to inability to drain fluid from they eye. The problem is there from birth but does not show until the dog is mature.
It is divided into Primary or Secondary types.
Primary is inherited
Secondary is due to other eye conditions causing damage to the eye structure.
Testing under (BVA) Eye Scheme will check for any presence of the inherited type of this disease and treatment will vary according to the type and severity of the illness.
CATARACTS
Cataracts can affect several breeds with the American Cocker Spaniels and standard Poodles being two of the breeds that can be affected.
A cataract results in an area of opacity around the area of the eye lens, resulting in blurred vision or even complete blindness.
They can be present at birth but not become apparent until the dog matures, when people notice their dogs eyes look cloudy
Regular vet checks will help catch the first signs and surgical removal of the cataract may be needed.
