WHERE COCKAPOOS COME FIRST!

TEACHING 'SIT'

Picture
For young pups, you can start teaching this basic command by simply watching their actions, and as soon as they go to sit, say the command 'sit' and reward and praise as soon as its bum hits the floor.

For the older pup or dog there is a bit of a more structured technique.

Get your dog to stand in front of you, and have a really tasty treat in your hand.

Starting with the treat by your dogs nose, slowly move your hand from nose level to over the dogs head.
As your dog follows the treat with its nose, his rear end will automatically lower into the sitting position.

As soon as he does sit, say the command 'sit' and give him loads of praise and reward with the tasty treat.

If you have problems with this exercise, if your dog jumps up to get the treat, or backs away from your hand then just keep repeating it,  but watch how far away from his nose you are putting the treat - it just needs to be a few centimeters.  dog backs away or jumps up at the treat you are taking your hand too far back over his head, or holding it too far away from his nose.

Just keep repeating this daily, whenever you have a spare few minutes, but dont do it for too long with young pups, just 5 minutes or so.
