INTRODUCING DISTANCE

As he gets used to being outside and also paying attention to what you are doing, it is time to get him used to learning how far he can wander from you. This should be done in a secure area.
THIS WAY!
Let him wander to the full length of his long training lead, with the lead trailing on the ground, when he reaches full distance, stand on the end of the lead and call his name.
Once you have his attention start walking away from him.
At this stage you can use the command ‘This Way’ to alert your dog you are changing direction. Give lots of fuss, praise and reward when he runs up to you.
WALK AWAY
Still on his training lead and keeping a close eye on him, start walking away from him without calling his name or using your recall command. If he doesn’t follow you, gently guide him the way you are going (using the long lead) and call him to you.
Give rewards and praise when he gets to you. He is learning to watch what you are doing and not to wander too far.
Keep repeating this exercise, and the work done last week. This shows your pup or dog that he has to keep an eye on you or you may walk away, and also that coming to you from a distance means more fun.
